We compare screen print and DTG methods for music t-shirts, focusing on print longevity. Learn which technique holds up best and how to care for your favorite band tees.

Quick answer

Screen printing generally lasts longer than DTG for high-wash items, but DTG offers better detail and feel on soft cotton shirts like our Tangle Tee or "If it's nice, then listen twice" tee.

Why screen print wins on durability

Screen printing forces thick layers of ink into the fabric, creating a raised feel that resists cracking and fading through many wash cycles. This makes it ideal for designs you want to keep for years.

The trade-off: screen print can feel stiff and less breathable, especially on lightweight fabrics. It also struggles with fine details and photographic images.

Where DTG excels

Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing uses inkjet technology to print directly onto the fabric, allowing for full-color, highly detailed designs without a heavy hand feel. On a 100% combed ring-spun cotton tee, DTG becomes part of the shirt rather than sitting on top.

The catch: DTG prints are thinner and can fade faster with frequent washing, especially if not cared for properly. They are best for designs with many colors or gradients that screen printing cannot reproduce.

Caring for your printed t-shirt

Regardless of the printing method, washing inside out in cold water and air drying will significantly extend the life of the print. Heat from dryers is the number one enemy of both screen and DTG prints.

For music t-shirts you wear often, consider buying two: one to wear and one to keep pristine. Our unisex tees are pre-shrunk and side-seamed, so they hold their shape wash after wash.

The verdicts

  • Claim: Screen print always lasts longer: Verdict: Mostly true. Screen print's thicker ink layer is more resistant to washing, but improper care can still cause cracking. For a shirt you wash weekly, screen print is the safer bet.
  • Claim: DTG fades after a few washes: Verdict: Misleading. Modern DTG inks and proper pretreatment make them much more durable than early versions. On high-quality cotton like our tees, DTG can last many washes if you avoid high heat.
  • Claim: You cannot wash DTG printed shirts in warm water: Verdict: False. Warm water is fine as long as you turn the shirt inside out and skip the dryer. Heat from drying is the real threat, not the water temperature. Always air dry printed t-shirts to maximize print life.

Products mentioned

  • Tangle Tee: 100% combed and ring-spun cotton, fabric weight 4.2 oz/yd², pre-shrunk. The lightweight, pre-shrunk cotton is ideal for DTG printing because the ink bonds well with the fibers, but it also means screen print may feel heavier.

  • "If it's nice, then listen twice" Unisex t-shirt: 100% combed and ring-spun cotton (heather colors contain polyester), fabric weight 4.2 oz/yd², pre-shrunk, side-seamed. Side-seamed construction helps the shirt keep its shape, which also helps preserve the print alignment through many washes.
